IMES Book Clubs + Arabic Lecture Series

January 14, 2017

Mitchell Ford, IMES's Senior Arabic Advisor, will host a second series of our Arabic Book Club this upcoming spring semester. Participants will have the opportunity to build their speaking and reading skills by meeting to discuss either Rijal fi al Shams by Ghassan Kanafani or an abridged copy of Sayyidi wa Habibi by Hoda Barakat. In addition to the regular book club meetings, we will host an Arabic-language instructional lecture series.

The two book clubs will begin meeting in late January and early February and will meet on a weekly basis, excluding Spring Break. Sessions will be led by Mitchell Ford on Saturdays, in which participants will discuss characters, events in the book, and their personal reflections on the novel. Books will be provided for all participants, but the sessions will be capped at approximately ten participants in order to maximise discussion. The Arabic Book Club is suitable for Arabic students across the GW community at the "Advanced" level (those who have completed at least two years of the instructional sequence).

Students will also be invited to a series of lectures conducted in Arabic by GW faculty. Students do not have to be members of the book club in order to attend these lectures. These lectures will be advertised periodically and only open to GW students.

If you are interested in joining the book club or learning more about the lectures, please email Mitch at [email protected].
