Assessing Language Learning with LinguaGrow
LinguaGrow is an online language learning portfolio that promotes autonomous learning through formative assessment. The portfolio is organized around the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements. Learners can set goals based on the Can-Do Statements, track their progress toward accomplishing the statements, and upload work samples to showcase their abilities. Learners are enabled to truly understand the differing levels of language proficiency through examining and practicing the language functions embodied by the Can-Do Statements. They can create evidence to include in their portfolios on a regular basis to showcase their work, which helps them see how they are building the capacity to use the target language. Learners have a clear voice in tailoring their learning experiences to their own needs, wants, and interests.
LinguaGrow has the power to:

• Empower learners to set goals and monitor their progress
• Promote reflective learning
• Emphasize communicative proficiency
• Encourage intercultural understanding
• Help guide language programs based on students’ strengths and needs
• Facilitate articulation among language programs based on a clear and commonly accepted description of language proficiency
Dr. Julie Sykes and Tigre Lusardi of the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon will present this online assessment tool in this ATC workshop.

Dr. Julie Sykes earned her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. She is the Director of the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) and an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Oregon. Her research focuses on applied linguistics and second language acquisition with an emphasis on technological and pedagogical innovation for interlanguage pragmatic development and intercultural competence. She has taught courses on second language teaching and learning, methodology and research, language learning and technology, Hispanic linguistics, and interlanguage pragmatic development.

Tigre Lusardi , M.A., is a Research Assistant on the curriculum team at the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon. He completed his M.A. in Language Teaching Studies at the University of Oregon, and holds a B.A. in Music and Italian Language & Literature from Smith College. His research focuses on increasing learner awareness of L1 and L2 pragmatics, and building learner facility and agency in using L2 pragmatics in context.
