IMES hosts scholarly lectures, expert panels, conferences, and other events designed for faculty, students, and others wanting an in-depth look at regional politics, economics, and culture. IMES hosts the DC Arabic Teachers’ Council which is sponsored by the Qatar Foundation. The DC-ATC provides virtual and in-person professional development workshops designed for Arabic instructors at all levels, to assist in developing new curricula, integrating pedagogical resources, and mastering new instructional technologies. DC-ATC also provides a platform for teachers of Arabic to meet, network, and share their own resources and ideas to elevate the teaching of Arabic language and culture. This programming is made possible through support and funding from Qatar Foundation International (QFI). QFI engages a diverse, global community of learners and educators, fostering cross-cultural connections through the exploration of the Arabic language and the Arab world’s histories, cultures, and peoples in student-centered learning environments. QFI is headquartered in Washington, DC and is a member of Qatar Foundation (QF).

Funded through the Department of Education Title VI grant, IMES provides professional development workshops, classroom resources, and reading guides on the Middle East for K-14 educators. Through our faculty experts, we continue to provide valuable resources from an interdisciplinary perspective to help educators move beyond the headlines and generate nuanced understandings of a commonly misunderstood region.

Educators can check out our YouTube playlists including: “K-14 Educator Resources” for general content on the Middle East; the “NCGE Webinars” playlist for content geared toward Geography teachers; and the “DC Arabic Teachers’ Council” playlist for content designed for teachers of Arabic.

IMES also offers a “Zoom in on the Middle East” virtual speakers bureau, a completely free resource that brings Middle East faculty into K-14 classrooms to speak with students and educators.

Our partnership with the Middle East Research & Information Project (MERIP) is designed to translate academic research into content designed for a broad public audience. MERIP’s 50 year legacy of providing on-the-ground analysis from a critical perspective provides a strong foundation for the creation of new resources for pedagogy and politics.
