Gender Equity for Kurdish Women in STEM Education: Opportunities and Challenges for Kurdistan and Iraq

 –

This is an in-person event and will be held Sigur Center Conference Room (503-W) in the Elliott School of International Affairs (1957 E St NW, Washington, DC). If you are interested in attending, please e-mail gsigur@gwu.edu to RSVP.

Kurdistan in the Iraqi state has developed a booming STEM sector. But gender equity remains an area underexamined, both in terms of research and as a policy concern. This seminar will shed light on the status of women in STEM in the context of Kurdistan and Iraq. Challenges center on social norms and practices, gender restrictions, and the lack of infrastructure to support women in STEM career paths. The discussion will also explore the skills necessary to develop greater access to opportunities in the country’s dynamic STEM sector.

This event is sponsored by the Sigur Center for Asian Studies and the Research Initiative on Multi-Nation States (RIMS).
