This workshop will discuss best practices in online course design using the Quality Matters Rubrics, which reflect the latest research findings and national standards in online learning. The workshop will also guide participants through the process of creating modules, quizzes, and assignments in Canvas, as well as grade management.

Speakers

  • Dr. Shaoyu Chi is Senior Instructional Designer at NOVA Online at Northern Virginia Community College, where she designs and oversees all World Language courses. For 25 years she has worked closely with faculty to design quality online courses and provide pedagogical consultation and instructional design support. She has also trained faculty to develop and deliver successful and effective online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses. Dr. Chi received her M.S. and Ed.D. in Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University.

  • Sana Hilmi is Assistant Professor of Arabic at Northern Virginia Community College. She previously taught at George Mason University, where she coordinated the university’s Arabic Program for over five years and received a Title VI grant to create a minor in Arabic. She has taught a variety of online courses and created an Arabic 201 course on Blackboard before shifting to using Canvas. Professor Hilmi has an M.A. in Linguistics and a TESL Certificate from George Mason University.
