Academic Programs
Students have many opportunities to participate in the academic life of the Institute for Middle East Studies (IMES). IMES supports the Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA)’s Middle East Studies Program (MESP) which includes a Master of Arts program and a Bachelor of Arts program in Middle East Studies. Course offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate level draw heavily from the various academic departments of the University, such as anthropology, history, geography, and political science. This diversity of theoretical approaches emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of international issues and gives students skills in pragmatic problem-solving and critical scholarly inquiry with which they can analyze pressing issues in the Middle East.
Students at all levels of study are invited to participate in the wide-range of events run by the Institute each semester. IMES programming includes brown-bag lunches, academic workshops and conferences, book launches, panel discussions, film screenings, and lecture series. These events allow students to engage with experts in relevant fields and academic disciplines and further their understanding of issues and policies that shape the Middle East.
