Funding
Capstone
Every Middle East Studies MA student must successfully complete a capstone project during their final year. In small groups, students propose and design a research project, write a research paper, and present their findings. Many students travel in order to conduct research for their capstones over either the Winter or Spring breaks. IMES offers funding to support this research travel, up to $2,500 per student. The Middle East Studies Program Director will offer more information on eligibility and how to access this funding during the capstone course.
PhD Student Research Grants
Each year the Institute for Middle East Studies provides small grants up to $2,500 to GW PhD students to assist them in conducting research or regional language study (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish or Kurdish). Applications will be evaluated by a committee of IMES faculty. Decisions will be based on quality and feasibility of the project, its contribution to IMES's mission of supporting scholarly research on the Middle East, and the applicant's fulfillment of grant conditions. To qualify, PhD students must be affiliated with IMES (email imes
gwu [dot] edu (imes[at]gwu[dot]edu) to request affiliation) and must actively participate in IMES programming. This would include things like presenting as part of the IMES Interdisciplinary workshop series; serving on the annual conference planning committee; and other activities as determined by the grant committee.
