The Taliban, The Islamic State, and the Future of Southwest Asia

RSVP Join the Middle East Policy Forum on Tuesday, November 2nd for a conversation about the “new” Taliban and onset of their deadly rivalry with the Islamic State in Khorasan (ISK). New battle lines are being drawn across Afghanistan, the dynamics of which will impact politics and security in broader Southwest Asia. The Middle East could see a rise in instability and sectarian violence if Afghanistan again becomes a hub for terrorists. Professor Abbas will also deliberate on what these new developments mean for US security policy across the region. This is a hybrid event. Members of the GW campus community are invited to attend in-person. Those outside of the GW campus community can only attend and participate online.

Speakers

Dr. Hassan Abbas is Distinguished Professor of International Relations at the Near East South Asia Strategic Studies Centre (NESA), National Defense University in Washington DC. His current research work focuses on building narratives for countering political and religious extremism & rule of law reforms in developing states. His publications include The Taliban Revival: Violence and Extremism in Pakistan – Afghanistan Frontier (Yale University Press, 2015); and most recently The Prophet’s Heir: The Life of Ali ibn Abi Talib (Yale University Press, 2021).
