Re-Engaging Gaza: Looking Beyond Politics Toward the Future

Tuesday, May 17, 2016 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Institute For Middle East Studies

This interdisciplinary conference will bring together a diverse group of scholars, journalists, and practitioners to discuss the complex contemporary issues facing the Gaza Strip. Looking beyond the dominant media and policy discourses, presenters will analyze issues of physical infrastructure, the dynamics of the public sphere and everyday politics, and the problematics of US policy. Our aim is to examine both the long-term structural issues and the ordinary daily obstacles facing the residents of Gaza and highlight the ways that individuals and institutions seek to circumvent or overcome these challenges.   Conference Schedule 8:30AM-9:00AM Participant Registration & Coffee 9:00AM-9:10AM Welcome Remarks from IMES Director Nathan Brown 9:15AM-10:45AM Panel I: Infrastructure in Gaza Moderator: Stephen Bennett Panelists: Bill Corcoran 10:45AM-11:00AM Coffee Break 11:00AM-12:30PM Panel II: Politics in Gaza Moderator: Dina Khoury Panelists: Rania Khalek, Ghaith al-Omari 12:30PM-1:30PM Lunch 1:30PM-3:00PM Panel III: Situation on the Ground in Gaza Moderator: Shira Robinson Panelists: Tareq Baconi, Jehad Abusalim 3:00PM-3:15PM Coffee Break 3:15PM-4:45PM Policy Response Moderator: Perry Cammack Panelists: Robert Danin, Paul Pillar, Michele Dunne, Ilana Feldman
